Important notes

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join.

Gauge is not important for this amigurumi. Use the same yarn weight, size hook and tension throughout the pattern.

Stuff and shape the pieces as you go.

When the pattern says to leave a long yarn tail, make sure it’s long enough (I usually leave about 20 inches [50 cm]). It’s better to be safe than sorry!

It’s a good idea to insert a stitch marker either in the first or the last stitch of each round to help keep your place. Move the marker as you work around.

How to insert the eyes. There are 2 options:

Option 1: Insert the eyes on the head before closing the head.

Option 2: Glue in the eyes at the end, when Max is fully assembled.

Finished size

Approximately 6½ inches (16½ cm) tall. Depending on the tension, hook, yarn

and how much stuffing you use, your amigurumi may be slightly smaller or larger than mine.

Insert the safety eyes on top of the 2 circles of felt and then insert the eyes with the felt (add a bit of glue behind the felt before putting it on the head) between rounds 8 and 9 of the head, counting from the top. Place the eyes about 1 inch (2½ cm) apart, or as desired. Place the plastic fastening circles to the back of each eye and continue crocheting the head.

Assembly

Muzzle: Sew the muzzle to the head using the yarn tail leftover from the

muzzle. The bottom of the muzzle is placed in between rows 4 and 5 of the head

(counting from the bottom of the head and up). You may stuff the muzzle a bit

more if desired just before completely sewing on the muzzle. Weave in the yarn tail.

Nose: Sew the nose onto the muzzle using the yarn tail leftover from the nose.

The bottom of the nose should be placed just under row 1 of the muzzle. Tuck in

the starting yarn tail under the nose as you go. Don’t cut off the yarn tail just yet.

You will use it for the mouth.

Patch on the head: If you chose Option 1 for the eyes, skip this step. Sew

the patch onto the left side of the head, just above the muzzle. Weave in the yarn tail.

Mouth: Embroider a mouth on the muzzle using the yarn tail from the nose.

Fasten the yarn with one of the stitches around the nose. Weave in the yarn tail.

Ears: Sew the ears on top of the head. Weave in the yarn tail.

Head and Body: Sew the head to the body on an angle using the head’s yarn

tail. Weave in the yarn tail.

Collar and Tag: Tie the tag around the middle of the collar, using the

starting and the end yarn tails of the tag. Make a knot and cut ends close to the

knot.

Put the collar around the dog’s neck and sew the 2 ends together.

Tail Patch: Sew the tail patch to the body. The bottom of the patch is placed

between rounds 1 and 2 of the body. The top of the patch should be placed

between rows 12 and 13 of the body. Tuck in the starting yarn tail of the patch as

you sew it on. Weave in the end yarn tail.

Tail: Sew the tail onto the body. The bottom of the tail should be placed on the

bottom and middle of the tail patch, and between rows 1 and 2, counting from the

bottom and up.

Oval Patches: Sew the patches on an angle, pointing towards the middle of

the body. The bottom of the patches should be placed one row above the top of

the tail patch and have 6 or 7 stitches in between the two patches. Tuck in the

starting yarn tail of each patch as you sew it on. Weave in the yarn tail.

Front Legs: Sew the legs on the body, with the opening of the legs layed flat.

Sew them on between rounds 16 and 17 of the body counting from the bottom and

up. Sew them on about 3 stitches apart. Sew down rounds 1 to 4, counting from the

opening and down, to tack down the legs.

Back Legs: Sew the legs on the body, with the opening of the legs layed flat.

Sew them on between rows 1 and 2 of body. Weave in the yarn tail.

Eyes: Option 2 for the eyes: Insert the safety eyes on top of the 2 circles of

felt. Glue on the felt and the eyes between rows 8 and 9 of the head, counting

from the top. Place the eyes about 1 inch (2½ cm) apart, or as desired.

Attach the muzzle, pin it to the head, stuff moderately for easy shaping, sew on. Next, try on the ears, you can vary their placement, once satisfied, hide wire ends in the head and sew on. Sew on the legs, I used the thread attachment method. 

Next, use strong thread to shape the muzzle. For convenience, mark the shaping spots with pins. Secure the thread at point 1, bring the needle out at point 2, make a stitch and return to point 1, repeat if necessary, secure. The following shapings go over the muzzle, secure the thread at point 4, then insert the needle at point 3 and bring it out at point 4, repeat, then from point 4, make a stitch to point 5, repeat; then from point 4 to point 6, repeat, secure and hide the thread. 

If necessary, brush the puppy. Sew on the eyes and nose, or you can glue on a plastic nose. Make several stitches above the eyes with a contrasting thread, these will be the eyebrows. Lastly, shape the legs. Define three toes with outer stitches. 

Shorts: 

Cast on 30 stitches. Start and end each row with an edge stitch. The fabric is reversible, meaning there will be a right and wrong side.

Rnd 1: Starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, sc, 1 sc, 5 sc in one loop (this should be the last loop of the chain), continue around: 1 sc, 3 sc in one loop (this should also be the first loop of the chain you started with) = 12 sc. 

Rnd 2: Inc, 3 sc, 3 inc, 3 sc, 2 inc = 18 sc. 

Rnd 3: 1 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc = 24 sc. 

Rnd 4: 16 sc, [sl st in next st, 3 ch, work 2 sc into the second ch from the hook, sl st into the same st where you started] repeat, 7 sc. 

Slip stitch to finish, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing, fasten off. 

Cover the top part of the nose with a row transition. The strip should be one row above the starting ring. Insert the filler, position it as needed for a prominent oval (or even rectangular) shape, then sew it on. Before completely sewing, stuff a bit more. Do not cut off the remaining thread. Lead the thread down to where the nose strip ends. Make a stitch down 2 rows, then bring the thread out to the side a couple of rows below. 

Make a large cross-stitch across, skipping the thread under the first stitch. Secure the thread on the black nose. 

Eyes (white), 2 pieces: 

Take a thin yarn, use a 1.5 mm hook. 

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring.

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, fasten off. 

Sew the eyes just above the muzzle, approximately 2 stitches apart. Sew them in an oval shape, slightly widening downwards. 

Sew rhinestones for the pupils slightly inward and above the center of the eye. Sew them with a doubled sewing thread with two stitches each, that’s enough. With each stitch, pull the thread tightly (but carefully) to make the rhinestone sit snugly. 

Ears (dark brown), 2 pieces:

*Cut a 15 cm long piece of wire. The wire serves as the body’s frame and allows you to adjust the head’s position. Bend one end. If the wire is wrapped, uncover most of it with a knife. 

*Insert the end of the wire with the bend into the neck hole. Push the wire almost to the end of the body by rotating it. Add stuffing to the body and neck. 

*Mark the point on the head for attaching the neck; it’s between the 7th and 8th rows from the beginning of the head. (See the photo.) 

*Mark the eye placement. Sew on the eyes. Insert the needle near the marked neck hole, bring it out near the eye area, then bring it back to the starting point. When sewing the eyes, you can create a slight indentation to make the eyes sit deeper. Repeat 2-3 times. Do the same for the second eye. 

*Widen the opening, for example, with a thick needle. Insert the wire into the marked point on the head and bring it out at the crown. 

*Sew the body to the head. 

*Stuff the rear legs about 2/3 full. Position the puppy and mark the location of the front legs. Fold the leg in half and sew it, catching both edges. Press it against the body and continue sewing until about the middle of the leg. 

*Sew on the tail. 

*If the puppy will be a keychain, create a loop at the end of the wire using flat-nose pliers. If the puppy will be a toy, cut off the excess wire. 

*Place the nose on the muzzle hole and sew it, adding some stuffing to the nose. 

*Sew the ears about 4-5 rows below the crown. 

*Embroider a smile, starting at about the 10th row from the beginning of the head. Use the same thread to embroider eyebrows. 

*If desired, create a tuft of hair.
